Alathur, September 11, 2026: The PG Department of English, Sree Narayana College, Alathur, in association with the Kerala Sahitya Akademi and under the aegis of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), is set to organize an international conference titled “AETHERIA” on 18 September 2026.
The conference, themed “Colonial Historiography: Language, Gender and Performance in Early Modern Keralam,” will examine the profound socio-political and cultural transformations that took place in Keralam during the colonial period and their lasting influence on society. The conference seeks to explore how media, culture and historical narratives contributed to changes in the social fabric of early modern Keralam.
The academic discussions will cover a wide range of areas, including colonial archives and the construction of Keralam’s history, silenced voices and counter-histories, language and power, multilingualism and translation, print culture, gender and social history, performance and community identity, decolonisation of historiography, digital humanities, cultural exchange, colonial legacies, reform and resistance, and film and visual histories of Keralam.
The conference will feature distinguished academic speakers. Ms. Saranya Chandran, Research Scholar in the Department of Historical Studies at Central European University, Vienna, and Visiting Fellow at the Mar Chrysostom Chair, MG University, Kottayam, will deliver a plenary session on “Writing the History of a Language: Sources, Methods and a Case Study from Early Modern Keralam.”
Dr. Sreeja G., Associate Professor and Head of the Department of English, NSS College, Nemmara, will lead an expert session on “From Ritual to Heritage: Performance, Power and the Making of Kerala’s Cultural History.”
The programme will commence with registration at 9.30 a.m., followed by the inaugural session from 10.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. The inaugural address will be delivered by Sri. K. R. Gopinath, Executive Member of the S N Trusts, while Sri. A. N. Anurag, RDC Convenor, will deliver the keynote address. Ms. Saranya Chandran will deliver the special address.
Technical sessions, interactive sessions and parallel paper presentations will form the major academic components of the conference. Paper presentations will be conducted in both online and offline modes, with a valedictory session scheduled from 3.30 p.m. to 4.00 p.m.
The conference is expected to provide an important academic platform for faculty members, research scholars and students to engage in interdisciplinary discussions on Kerala’s colonial past, cultural history, language, gender and performance.
The organising team is headed by Dr. Praveena Vijayan, Principal, with Ms. Remya Rajan E, Head of the Department of English, serving as Convener. Dr. Poornima P. L. and Ms. Kalyani Shaji are the coordinators, with the support of the IQAC, IKS Cell and faculty members of the Department of English.
