Alathur, October 6, 2026: The National Service Scheme (NSS) Units 37 and 117 of Sree Narayana College, Alathur, Palakkad, organised a Cleaning Drive as part of the Gandhi Jayanti Celebration and Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign on October 6, 2026.
The cleaning programme was conducted from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Alathur Police Station and its surrounding areas. The initiative was organised with the objective of promoting cleanliness, civic responsibility and environmental awareness among students and the wider community.
The programme drew inspiration from the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, particularly his emphasis on cleanliness, self-discipline and service to society. The campaign carried the message “Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath”, encouraging collective participation in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
As part of the drive, NSS volunteers took part in cleaning activities in and around the police station premises. The volunteers worked together to remove waste and improve the cleanliness of the surrounding public area. The initiative highlighted the importance of students actively contributing to the cleanliness and well-being of their local community.
The cleaning drive also sought to reinforce the message that maintaining a clean environment is not merely the responsibility of government agencies or local authorities but a shared responsibility of every citizen. Through their participation, the NSS volunteers demonstrated the spirit of community service and social commitment that forms an important part of the NSS programme.
The programme was conducted under the banner of Swachhata Hi Seva 2026, connecting the college’s community-service activities with the broader national emphasis on cleanliness and sustainable living. The initiative promoted three important themes: a clean environment, a healthy community and a sustainable tomorrow.
The participation of NSS volunteers in a public-space cleaning activity also provided them with practical exposure to community engagement and civic responsibility. Such activities help students understand the importance of teamwork, voluntary service and responsible citizenship.
The cleaning drive served as a meaningful extension of the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations at Sree Narayana College, Alathur, translating the values associated with Mahatma Gandhi into practical community action. The programme conveyed a strong message that small, collective efforts can make a significant contribution towards creating cleaner and healthier surroundings.
The initiative concluded with an emphasis on continuing cleanliness practices beyond the campaign and encouraging members of the community to take responsibility for keeping public spaces clean.
