Institutional Visit to Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI)
Venue: Kerala Forest Research Institute, Peechi, Thrissur, Kerala
As part of the academic enrichment and practical exposure program, students of EWM Department, SNC Alathur visited the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) at Peechi, Thrissur. The visit aimed to familiarize students with advanced research practices in forestry, biodiversity conservation, and environmental management.
The Kerala Forest Research Institute is an autonomous institution established under the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE). Since its inception in 1975, KFRI has been engaged in scientific research, conservation, and sustainable management of tropical forests and natural resources. It houses well-equipped laboratories, a botanical garden, herbarium, library, and specialized research divisions.
Objectives of the Visit
To understand the scope of research in forestry and environmental sciences.
To gain exposure to laboratory techniques, data collection, and biodiversity documentation.
To interact with scientists and research scholars about current conservation challenges and solutions.
To observe practical applications of theoretical concepts learned in class.
Activities and Observations
Laboratory Visits: Students toured the wood science laboratory, soil analysis unit, and plant tissue culture lab.
Botanical Garden & Arboretum: Participants observed rare, endemic, and medicinal plant species maintained for conservation and research purposes.
Biodiversity Documentation: Demonstrations were given on herbarium specimen preparation and biodiversity indexing.
Interactive Session: Scientists provided presentations on climate change impacts, afforestation programs, and sustainable forest management strategies.
Water and Soil Testing Demonstration: The environmental sciences division showcased water quality analysis and soil nutrient evaluation methods.
Key Learnings
Importance of research in protecting fragile ecosystems.
Advanced methodologies in biodiversity conservation.
Interdisciplinary nature of forestry, combining biology, chemistry, environmental science, and data analysis.
The role of technology, such as GIS mapping, in forest resource management.
The visit to KFRI proved to be an enriching academic experience, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical applications. It enhanced the students’ awareness of environmental challenges and inspired them to contribute towards conservation and sustainable development.
